Vintage Steele: Cream Suit

"Vintage Steele" (Season 1, Episode 19) is a fun episode of Remington Steele for at least three reasons:

  1. It's the first episode which shows a glimpse of a different side of the otherwise by-the-book, private detective Laura Holt.
  2. It has funny, rapid-fire dialogue among Remington, Laura and an ex-boyfriend, reminiscent of screwball comedies of the 1930s.
  3. A third reason to watch this episode is for the suit that Laura wears for the first twenty minutes or so. It's a cream or ecru, collarless, one-button suit in what might be gaberdine. The pencil skirt is tea-length with matching peep-toe pumps.

This episode was filmed in the icy cold autumn, you can see the actors' breath in some of the outdoor scenes. Still, you could wear this suit in warmer months in a lighter weight fabric- a linen, for instance.

The suit has no collar, so the collar of her shirt is emphasized. The stance on the shirt collar is elevated to admit a scarf around her neck. It's slightly reminiscent of the trendy, yet dignified, masculine high collar from the early- to mid-19th century; you'll find portraits of U.S. Presidents wearing them just under their earlobes at the time.

Laura wears a blue scarf as a tie that falls loosely to her waist. Let's go to the close up.

Polka dots. Ecru polka dots on a navy blue background.

Chic and timeless. Authoritative but not stiff.  Whimsical without being foolish. With a change of fabric, you could wear it in any season. Who wouldn't wear this? Who couldn't wear this? No one.

This seems to be an ensemble that would flatter most female forms.  Let's see if we can find something close to this outfit.

1. H&M Lace Jacket [Alternatives H&M Short Jacket and H&M Linen Blazer] |2. John Lewis' Kaliko Zip Back Pencil Skirt  |3. Van Heusen Ladies Long-Sleeve Oxford Shirt |4. Navy Polka Dot Silk Scarf by Wolfmark  |5.Open Toe, Slingback Sandal by Walking Cradles

This collarless cream suit with blue scarf is one of the most stunningly gorgeous outfits that Laura wears in any of the show's five seasons. No ensemble from any other season of "Remington Steele" will top this one.

What will Laura wear next?
(Should we care after this?)
