Steele Away With Me: Tunic, Culottes, Espadrilles

What will Laura wear next? Let's look inside her closet.

There are many "Remington Steele" (1982-1987) episodes which feature clothes for colder seasons of the year. You'll have to search hard to find summery outfits on our leading lady, Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist).

Warm-weather clothing usually can be seen when a character in "Remington Steele" goes on vacation, or when someone with important information goes out of the U.S. to another country, making it necessary for Detective Laura to follow. The person who goes missing usually chooses a place with clear skies, mild weather and an ocean nearby.

On these trips, Laura changes from her usual suits for the office and jeans for home, and instead dons linen shorts and espadrilles.

Season 2 begins with "Steele Away with Me," two episodes set in sunny Acapulco.

The costumer for this episode, Emma Trenchard, has chosen Carole Little pieces for Laura's escapade to Mexico. Ms. Little was a California designer whose Saint Tropez-West line of clothes were must-have items in the late 20th century. The garments were also affordable.

Laura is ambitious, lives on the west coast, runs her own business and must account for every penny. If Laura were real, the '80s line of clothing from Saint Tropez-West is exactly what she would wear.

The Outfit

When crooks attempt to kidnap Laura by tossing her into a car, it's a good thing our detective is dressed for action. She's in a teal tunic for ease of movement. The tunic is paired with beige, linen culottes with a handy pocket on the leg which holds a pen and paper (for writing down all those clues).

Mixing it up a bit, instead of a belt, the costumer uses a scarf or sash to accentuate Laura's waist. This is also not to injure the actress with a hard, leather belt, since she is picked up by the waist and carried as the bad guy leans from the window of a moving car. Sensible espadrilles round out the ensemble. Perfect for an endless search around Acapulco to find a missing man.

Here is how to recreate the look:

Well, that's Laura Holt's Closet's first look at our leading lady in warm weather. The costumer has chosen mostly solid colors for Laura in Acapulco, making this outfit very simple to recreate with almost any brand.
